Shower, Shoes, Socks?

Shower Up, Jumbled Dreams, Charity Partner

Jeannie spent a Monday night in the dog days of August on the streets of Nashville, four hours from home.  She had driven down from Kentucky to help those experiencing homelessness with her children and their friends.

The family had collected toiletries and supplies to hand out and were eager to make new friends with those on the streets.  As the hours went by, Jeannie and her kids found themselves in tears as the stories from those on the streets were told.

The last shower of the night was for a respectful young man who called himself a “train jumper.”  He explained how Jesus was a traveler and he enjoyed traveling the world spreading love like Jesus did.  He ate a hot meal, took a hot shower, put on his clean new clothes, and looked down at his feet.  “Do you happen to have a pair of socks left?” he said.  Unfortunately, we didn’t.

He shrugged it off and started to put his shoes on.  Jeannie said, “Wait a minute!”  she sat down, took her shoes off, and gave him her socks.  “They might be a little dirty,” she said, “but I hope they will do.”  He smiled as a tear rolled down his face and he hugged Jeannie.  “God Bless you,” he said.

He waved goodbye and headed on his journey.  We asked Jeannie what moved her to give him her socks and she simply said, “That’s what you would do for a friend and he is my friend.”
