A Knock at the Door…

Jumbled Dreams, Making a Difference, Boy Scouts

I was sitting in my office working and I heard voices outside.  Odd.  We had just moved into a new house and didn’t know anyone in the area.  Then there was a knock on the door.

I opened the door and had to look down.  There stood Nathan, all 3’5 inches of him all dressed in his Cub Scout uniform eager to tell me his story.

“Hi,” he said.  “My name is Nathan and I’m selling popcorn for the Boy Scouts to raise funds for the military.  Can you buy some?”

I smiled and squatted down to talk to him and look at his packet full of goodies.  “I don’t know,” I said.  “Can I?”  Nathan smiled and said, “Well, sure you can!”  I asked him which one was his favorite and he eagerly showed me the movie theater butter flavor.  It looked good to me too.  I asked him to wait there for just a moment while I asked Sydnee for her opinion.

Sydnee came to the door and looked at Nathan and smiled.  “Hi Nathan, my name is Sydnee.  How old are you?” she asked.  Nathan stood up real tall and said, “I’m six and I only need two more sales to meet my goal.  Will you help me?”  Sydnee looked at me and we both said yes, of course.

Nathan then made such an amazing suggestion.  “If you don’t really want the popcorn, you can make a donation to the military instead.  It’s for the people who protect us you know,” he said.  Sydnee and I looked at him and said, “Sold, Nathan!  That’s a fantastic idea!”

He smiled so big and Sydnee told him she hoped to see him again soon and maybe they could play together.  Nathan excitedly asked,” Well, what are you doing tonight?”  We all chuckled and then Sydnee asked if they could take a picture together to share his story with our friends.  His face beamed as he posed with his new friend.

So many believe that if you can’t give a lot of money or sponsor a huge project that what you do won’t make a difference; this is so far from true.  There are many who are passionate about changing the world, focusing on others, and giving all they have.  This is how miracles happen; this is how lives are changed; this is how we change the world.  Thank goodness for Nathan.
