What is your story?
I have always served as somebody who supports their friends. While I myself have struggled with depression and anxiety, I usually become the friend who is emotional support for others. I love to be that person for others. I think it is so incredible when you become that person who someone can lean on, and feel safe with. I watched one of my best friends, and roommate, struggle and contemplate taking her own life. I was able to become a support system she needed, and lacked at home, and she is still here today. Mental health is an epidemic and we need more people to be aware, empathetic, and understanding. I use my voice to make people feel like they belong. Checking in on friends, talking with them, and helping them walk through recovery can be huge. You feel like it is so small, but it has such an impact. Listen, love, and learn from those around you that are struggling.
What can you tell others who are going through the similar things?
Don’t be afraid to ask for additional support. While supporting your friends is important, you have to be willing to reach out for support for yourself. Sometimes taking all the emotions on your own can be difficult. Don’t forget about yourself in the process of becoming a support system for the people you love.
